The origins of Vasto date back to the age of the ancient Italic peoples, when it was an important settlement of the Frentani, before being conquered by the Romans. Its ancient name was Histonium. In the Middle Ages there was a decay period, then a cultural and economic recovery was brought by the Longobards, who called the town Guasto.

PUNTA ADERCI - (5 km from Vasto Marina)

The natural reserve Punta Aderci (or Punta d'Erce) is a protected area established in 1998. It is extended on a surface of 285 hectares, northern to the Vasto port, until reaching the Sinello river, where it is possible to visit the only broad-leaved wood in the reserve. Among the typical vegetation of sandy beaches: the rivastrello flower, the ammophila, the sea holly, the xanthium italicum, the beach caper, the yellow poppy, the myrtle, the Kali-salzkraut, the sea lily, the thorny fennel. Off the coast of the reserve it is possible to view the Striped dolphins, or tursiops dolphins besides other several marine species typical of the Adriatic sea. Birds: people keen on bird watching can observe here besides the fratino (Charadrius alexandrinus), which is the reserve symbol, the major flamingo, the grey heron, the night heron, the sgarza adreola, the little Bittern, the Botaurus, the little egrette, among the birds of prey the kestrel and the buzzard.

TREMITI ISLANDS - (78 km from Vasto Marina - whose 47 KM by ferry boat)

The Tremiti Islands (also called Diomedee) are an archipelago of the Adriatic sea, situated at 12 sea miles northern to the Gargano promontory (Lesina lake) and at 24 sea miles eastern to the Molise coast. As administrative district, the archipelago is the Italian commune of Isole Tremiti, with 497 inhabitants, included in the province of Foggia. The commune is included in the Gargano National Park and part of its territory is included since 1989 in a sea reserve. Being the smallest commune in Apulia and the second less inhabited (the most inhabited is only Celle di San Vito). Isole Tremiti is one of the most important tourist centre in the whole region. Thanks to the clearness of the sea the municipalities on this coast have been entitled to the acknowledgment Bandiera Blu d’Europa Blu European flag for unpolluted sea water. In general the Tremiti Islands have a markedly Mediterranean climate.

THE “T R A B O C C H I” COAST

The Trabocchi coast is the name given to that part of coastline in the province of Chieti, so called because of the presence of many Trabocchi , a sort of picaresque pile work huts used as fishing machine by tradition in this area. Thanks to the clearness of the sea the municipalities on this coast have been entitled to the acknowledgment Bandiera Blu d’Europa Blu European flag for unpolluted sea water. Valley and hills slowly decline down to the coastline, crating amazing and different landscapes.

ROCCASCALEGNA - (63 km from Vasto Marina)

Roccascalegna rises on a rocky hills dominating the Rio Secco valley, an affluent on the right bank of the Aventino river. On the big rock a steep castle overlooks the village. The stronghold was built in 1250 by Gualtiero Palearia. In 1647 the baron Corvo De Corvis ordered the so-called ius primae noctis with redemption agreement. According to the tradition, on a former wall there was the mark of the bloody hand of a desperate bride, who stabbed the baron. The territory has a surface of 22,83 square kilometres in the uphill area.During the 11th and 12th century it was reclaimed by the Benedectine monks, as the church of St. Pancrazio bears witness, which preserves the ruins of the abbey of the 9 th century. After the Normann conquest the commune in the 12th century Roccascalegna had a prestige role since an imposing towered castle was built, a valuable defensive bulwark of the valley. During the 15th century, it was a feud of Raimondo de Anchino, the Gualtieri of Manoppello, the Orsini, Crafa and Corbo. In the 18 th century it belonged to the Croce-nanni family.

GUARDIAGRELE - (76 km from Vasto Marina)

Gabriele D’Annunzio called it the Terrace of Abruzzo and not by chance, since Guardiagrele, situated on the eastern Majella slopes has a wonderful view over the Adriatic sea. In this small town was born the sculptor Nicola da Guardiagrele and the town can be defined the capital of Abruzzo’s handicraft (wrought iron and copper) and in particular of goldsmith’s art.Still today rich in many medieval elements, Guardiagrele reached its highest importance during the 12th century, when a first small defensive town called Greelem was found in this territory.The first who had settled this area were the Benedectine monks and built a monastery. D’Annunzio, the so-called Vate writer quoted Guardiagrele in its famous novel Il Trionfo della Morte. PARCO NAZIONALE D'ABRUZZO - (146 km from Vasto Marina)

The National Park of Abruzzo is basically made up of a mountain chain system, whose altitude range varies from 900 mt to 2200 mt above sea level The mountains in the park represent a colourful landscape rich in rounded peaks typical of the Appennini, as well as rocky slopes with a more alpine shape The National Park of Abruzzo together with the Gran Paradiso National Park is the oldest nature park in Italy, well known all over the country for the leading role it plays in the preservation of some animals species, such as the Appennine wolf , the Abruzzo chamois and the Marsican bear. The park is covered with beech woods that cover quite the whole surface. It spreads mostly over a mountainous and shepherd territory, where the cultivation of olive groves and vineyards is not feasible, reaching in its extension over the cultivation plane of Giovenco Valleys and Comino valley. The presence of big mammalians has been the main reason of the creation of the nature reserve: Marsican brown bear, Appennine wolf, Abruzzo chamois, Deer, roe deer.
